Power outages cause protests in Merida

On Friday, April 4th, power outages caused by strong winds and high temperatures in the state sparked protests on Mérida’s Periferico, where residents blocked the secondary road near the CETRAM Oriente station.

According to the protesters, the constant and prolonged power outages have affected their daily activities for three days, with outages that in some cases have lasted up to 12 hours.

The protesters placed sticks and stones on the road, impeding vehicular traffic. They indicated that they would maintain the blockade until they received a satisfactory response from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

“Food is spoiling, stores can’t operate, and the CFE continues to charge as if nothing happened,” said one of those affected.

Also on Friday, strong winds caused a power line to break loose and make contact with a metal pole on 55th Street near Periférico, in the Francisco Villa neighborhood of the municipality of Kanasín. This left a large section of the area without power.

Power outages were also reported last Wednesday in the Polígono 108 and Nueva Pacabtún neighborhoods. The night before last in Francisco de Montejo, north of Mérida, residents endured high temperatures without power for several hours.
