Fires are the order of the day, and on Wednesday it was also the turn of the Yucatecan capital, where a large and raging blaze ravaged the so-called “Pensiones Boardwalk.”
According to information obtained, the fire occurred around 6 p.m., when the first flames were spotted on the land located at 21st Street and 124th Street in the Jacinto Canek neighborhood.
State agents and firefighters responded to the scene following reports of intense smoke billowing from the amount of dry vegetation consumed by the flames.
Firefighters immediately arrived and began working to try to control the situation. However, the flames spread rapidly due to the intense wind that lingered throughout the afternoon and continued into the evening.
Several firefighter units and state police officers were required to combat the blaze.
Several firefighters had to enter the fire to fight it from within. The comings and goings of firefighters fighting the blaze were visible in that area.
The fire was still burning as night fell. The heavy smoke made it difficult for drivers to see. By late evening, the orange glow of the fire was noticeable among the clouds of smoke, affecting several surrounding neighborhoods and residential areas.
However, by 7:30 p.m., the fire had been brought under control, and only a few active flames were visible.
Several onlookers gathered at the scene to capture videos of the flames, which had reached considerable heights, and of the firefighters’ efforts to extinguish them.
A portion of that road was closed while firefighters and police continued to control the fire, so vehicle traffic was diverted. The cloud of smoke was visible for several blocks around the site, which was recognized as a landmark due to the large amounts of water it accumulated after the heavy rains that fell in Mérida due to Storm Cristobal in 2020, where herons and other birds were even seen. Hence, the name “The Pensiones Boardwalk” began to emerge.
