Visitors who arrived in Chicxulub Puerto this weekend reported on social media about the situation they encountered while walking along the beach in this Progreso municipality.
According to reports, there is a stretch of beach near 12th Street where the construction of a suspected perimeter wall was detected, which is currently in the foundation stage.
The construction directly borders the ocean, making it difficult to walk there. Until just over a week ago, this area had about six or seven meters of beach, but today it has disappeared due to construction.
It’s worth mentioning that the property is adjacent to other properties in the same area, thanks to the construction. However, it is still unknown whether the construction site is part of the property or if it is another case of appropriation.
From what has been found so far, the property in question is a house identified as “El Capricho,” and the only information that has been obtained about the owners is that they are a family named Preve.
This has sparked a debate on social media, as many users have commented that this situation is very common on beaches along the Progreso coast.
Similar cases have been reported in areas such as Chelem and Chuburná, where the beach is practically gone due to construction.
It’s worth mentioning that the Yucatan coast is currently severely eroded, so in many places, the sea has already reached the houses located on the beachfront. This creates a conflict between the owners of these properties and those who oppose construction on the seashore.
On Monday, March 31, the property in question was sealed off by the Urban Development Department of the Progreso City Council.
Now, the construction cannot continue until the legal status of the land is clarified, to determine whether more than the rightful area is being taken or if construction is being done on their property.
