An injured parrot is saved in Merida after found hanging by a leg from a palm tree

A parrot was trapped high in a palm tree in northern Mérida. The bird was trying to fly out from a cavity it was using as a nest, but one of its legs got stuck in a slot, leaving it hanging and unable to free itself.

In a desperate attempt to escape, the parrot ended up seriously injured, even mutilating two of its four toes. The scene was alarming, but it did not go unnoticed.

Thanks to the quick intervention of caring citizens, Yilian—the owner of the parrot accessory store Pepe Toy’s—the SSP fire department, and the Proyecto Santa María team, an urgent rescue was organized. The team mobilized from Hunucmá to the scene of the incident, and after informing the environmental authorities, the bird was rescued.

The parrot was immediately taken to receive specialized veterinary care. Due to the severity of its injuries and exposed bones, it was not possible to release him back into the wild, as he will require medical follow-up in the coming days.
