The director of the Hunucmá Municipal Police attacked in broad daylight

The director of the Hunucmá Municipal Police, Carlos Canul, filed a criminal complaint following an alleged attack against him, apparently perpetrated by a local criminal group.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, when Canul received a text message requesting his assistance regarding a reported house fire. Upon verifying the report, it was found to be a false alarm.

Later, the police chief, accompanied by two officers, went to a cafeteria in the city center. At that moment, a gray Renault vehicle with four individuals on board attempted to block his path and assault him. Thanks to the intervention of other nearby police units, the assailants fled, but not before threatening to kill the officer.

Although an operation was deployed, no arrests were made, although authorities have already identified one of the assailants. This attack is presumed to be related to the anti-drug operations in the municipality.

The director filed a criminal complaint this morning under preliminary investigation number UNATD26-GK/307/2025, and the investigation continues to find those responsible.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and collaborate in protecting those responsible for the municipality’s security. Any suspicious activity is requested to be reported to the emergency number 911.
