Residents of the port of Sisal rejected the fact that foreigners and outsiders continue to take over land facing the sea in this community.
At least 300 people held a peaceful demonstration outside the UNAM Academic Unit in this port, in which they asked the authorities to allocate a piece of land that was closed by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), after the citizens themselves removed coastal vegetation from this space.
In this sense, the residents assure that no crime was committed since they were only seeking to protect this space from speculation.
“We have not committed any crime, we have not damaged or destroyed anything as it is being made out to be. What we are fighting for is to be able to recover these lands so that they are not sold again,” said Shirley Galaz Hernández, a resident of Sisal.
Profepa denounced that the residents of Sisal, one of the magical towns of Yucatan, destroyed coastal vegetation on a 2.3-hectare plot of land, which is located 100 meters from the coastline.
However, the citizens affirm that the intention is for this space to be protected and divided among the families that require a property on this site, as they warn that several businessmen already have their sights set on this site.
The residents drafted a petition that they will send to the government of Yucatan, to which they added the signatures of more than 300 people who support that the land in question be granted to the residents.
“So that our children and grandchildren have the opportunity to have a piece of land that is legalized so that they can build their houses and can have a solid heritage,” the statement reads.
The citizens stated that the eastern and western sectors of this port are in the hands of private investments, so they claim that the land they are seeking to be ceded is the last one they could access, so they demand that their request be expedited.
