The Voices Choir of La Ibérica made up of older adults who are part of the workshops given at the Cultural Center of the same name, will represent our state in the 2nd. Edition of the International Choir Festival Ecos en la Niebla, in Xalapa, Veracruz, next April.
Made up of women and men between 50 and 75 years old, this group emanating from the artistic training workshops of the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta) of the Government of Yucatán will sing pieces of Yucatecan music at events.
There will be 17 voices, accompanied by Maestro Blanca Fuentes on the piano, and the choir director, Nalleli González Contreras, who will go to the capital of Veracruz, according to the latter. At the end of a group rehearsal, he highlighted the passion with which Voces de La Ibérica is preparing its presentation that will be heard by the public attending the event and the choral performances from other states in the country and abroad.
According to González Contreras, it was in 2017 that the group officially began to form with six singers who debuted that same year under the name of the La Ibérica Cultural Center, located in this Yucatecan capital and which is part of the network of artistic promotion and training spaces of the Sedeculta.
In 2023, the choir was consolidated as a group that represents the institution and is already part of the country’s choral offering as one of the most outstanding due to the age range of its members.
There are many groups, indicated the also members of the National Network of Choir Directors, but they are mostly made up of young people, girls and boys or adults.
He commented that, for this 2nd. Edition of the International Choir Festival, Voces de La Ibérica is the only invited group of older adults and the second to participate after the 1st. Edition of the choral meeting.
He highlighted that attending as guests increases the commitment of the Yucatecan choir and encourages them to have greater preparation because “choirs from other countries also arrive and this demands more of us.”
