Locust swarm is observed in the eastern area of Mérida

Due to its favorable conditions for reproducing the plague, Yucatán is one of the areas with the highest risk in Central America for locusts, although they do not currently represent a danger.

However, you can see the insects flying over the skies of Mérida and municipalities of the state, as happened yesterday in the east of the capital.

This Friday morning, residents of that sector of the city were surprised by the visit of a swarm of locusts that flew over the streets, houses, and parks of the area in search of food.

The locusts were also on the grounds of the former Mayapán rope factory and perched on the trees of the subdivision’s homes.

A locust swarm is a migratory phenomenon in which a group of locusts fly together to feed and reproduce. They can be destructive mainly to agriculture, as locusts feed on crops.

In recent days these flying insects have been seen in various parts of the city, mainly in areas of the west, center, and east of Mérida.

The Central American locust is a pest of economic importance in Mexico and is under official control in Yucatán and nine other entities such as Campeche, Chiapas, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.

The lobster does not represent any risk to human health or domestic animals, it only feeds on vegetables.
