An expert warns about “grooming” on social media in Yucatán

Access to digital platforms, video games, and social networks is available to everyone, including minors, who often do not understand the dangers they could represent.

A clear example of this is “grooming”, a technique used by adults to gain the trust of a minor and obtain personal information, manipulate them, or even ask for photos and videos for extortion or sexual abuse.

The president of the State Institute of Transparency, Access to Public Information and Protection of Personal Data (Inaip), María Gilda Segovia Chab, invited parents to take care of minors not only physically, but also in the virtual world.

“It is essential that we monitor minors when they use these platforms, games, and social networks. “I always tell parents: activate parental control measures,” he said.

The commissioner considered it crucial that parents be aware of the activities of minors when they surf the Internet. Proper monitoring allows them to track their online interactions and protect them from any situation that could become dangerous.

One of the best security measures is the use of parental controls, which allow you to monitor, manage, and restrict access to certain content so that minors do not see inappropriate material or become victims of online harassment.

Parents can set alerts for keywords like “drugs,” “violence,” and “weapons,” making it easy to monitor activities on the platforms kids use, as well as the pages they visit.

Setting time limits or assigning specific times for supervised internet use can be a great way to ensure safe and responsible browsing. The online safety of minors depends largely on the attention and supervision of the adults around them, so the use of protection tools is essential for their well-being.
