According to the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), carnivals in the Mexican Caribbean generate an economic impact, benefiting multiple sectors such as hotels, transportation, gastronomy, and local commerce, by attracting thousands of visitors, national and international.
Although they are not yet among the favorites of the Caribbean region, they are already beginning to be among the best in Mexico, such is the case of Cozumel, which according to data from the federal Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), occupies fourth position in the top five.
It is only surpassed by that of Veracruz, the best in the country and known as the happiest in the world; that of Mazatlán, with more than 120 years of tradition.
That Campeche, which is the oldest – dates back to 1582 and is characterized by a mixture of Mayan and Spanish traditions.
Below the Cozumel carnival, in fifth position, the Ensenada carnival, one of the most popular in the north of the country.
Cozumel is one of the most emblematic events on the island, attracting numerous visitors and generating a significant economic impact.
In the 2020 edition, an economic spill of approximately 450 million pesos was reported. To date, no official figures have been published on the spill generated in 2024.
Almost a month before the pre-Lent event, the Central Island Lodging Association is already preparing for that special week in the middle of the low season. They remember that on carnival dates, tourists spend an average of five days overnight, and up to 100% occupancy is reported in their lodging centers.
In addition, many repeat visitors arrive, since they only like to come to enjoy the carnival.
Attendees typically spend on lodging, food, transportation, souvenirs, and recreational activities. According to authorities’ estimates, a carnival visitor can spend between eight thousand and 15 thousand pesos per stay.
In Quintana Roo, the carnivals of Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Chetumal, and Playa del Carmen are next in importance and attendance, respectively, and which not only stand out for the cultural wealth of Quintana Roo but also become tourist attractions that boost the economy and They strengthen local traditions.
This 2025, the Quintana Roo carnivals will take place on the following days:
Cozumel, from February 26 to March 5, with preliminary parties from February 1 to 23
Cancun, from February 22 to March 4
Isla Mujeres, from February 28 to March 4 Playa del Carmen, from February 24 to March 4
