A man known as “El Wero” was lynched and burned alive by residents of the Tekit, Yucatán after attacking a woman identified as Doña Candy with a machete. The victim, who was sitting at the door of his house, died after the aggression.
Outraged by the attack and the death of the woman, the residents captured the aggressor and, taking justice into their own hands, set him on fire right in the main square.
The homicide and lynching occurred during the evening of Monday, January 27.
According to residents, the man was a known local drug addict who had previously committed other violent acts. They said that four years ago he murdered another person with a pickaxe and that he was confined in a rehabilitation center after the incident.
The municipal police, the state police, and the National Guard failed to control the angry mob.
On social media, Dulce María, daughter of the deceased woman, expressed her indignation:
“Municipal President of Tekit, excuse me for the words I will say; I hope you have enough courage to do justice. This is a daughter speaking to you, hurt by the violent killing of her mother. If you don’t carry out justice, my brothers and I will. We want justice! Tekit must raise its voice. Today it is my mother, tomorrow it could be any of us.”
In a statement, the state government sent its condolences to the family of the murdered woman and condemned the acts of violence by taking justice into its own hands.
