Yucatan businessmen are concerned about Donald Trump’s tariffs

The new administration of Donald Trump could impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican products, putting at risk 81.2 percent of national exports destined for the United States, which is why the president of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index) in Yucatan, Alejandro Guerrero Lozano, warned that key sectors such as textiles, agro-industry, automotive and aerospace could be the most affected.

The beginning of the new US administration, headed by Donald Trump, who takes office this Monday, January 20, has generated alarm in the export sector of Yucatan.

The possibility of stricter tariff policies threatens to seriously affect binational trade, an essential pillar of the local and national economy.

Alejandro Guerrero Lozano, president of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index) in Yucatan, reported that companies have brought forward the shipment of inventories to the US market to avoid the consequences of possible trade restrictions.

Yucatán, whose economy depends largely on trade with the United States, faces a complicated outlook. 81.2 percent of Mexican exports are destined for that country, and key sectors such as the automotive, aeronautical, medical, and textile industries could suffer the greatest impacts.
