The constitutional reform initiative promoted by the Morena representative to declare animals as sentient beings and subjects of rights, Neyda Pat Dzul, may open the possibility of eradicating, even gradually, the so-called lasso tournaments in Yucatán, a spectacle recently established and includes a high rate of violence and animal cruelty.
Animal protectors have demonstrated on more than one occasion their indignation at roping tournaments, calling on the authorities to prohibit them, alleging that these events involve animal cruelty, remembering that in these events the “fun” is in some horse ending up gutted by the bovine specimens trained for that when entering the ring.
These tournaments consist of several riders entering an arena to try to lasso a bull, but due to the inexperience and lack of skill of many of them, the horses repeatedly suffer serious injuries and in some cases end up gutted.
On December 20, before the Plenary Session of the LXIV Legislature, the President of the Board, Pat Dzul, presented an initiative to reform the Law for the Protection of State Fauna and prevent harm that may be caused to animals through human or technological actions.
He expressed that this initiative also seeks to promote adoption, sterilization, and education programs on the responsible care of animals, as well as prevent behaviors for those who commit acts of cruelty, where the so-called “lasso tournaments” can enter.
The Morena representative explained that if approved, it would be complemented by the reform approved by the Chamber of Deputies of the Congress of the Union last November, which, in summary, establishes that “animal care is a coordinated responsibility between governments.” federal, state and municipal.
With these actions, he added, “a Mexico is promoted that respects, is empathetic and promotes care for living beings and that gives a voice to those who do not have one, protects those who cannot do so and guarantees a future in which well-being animal be a reality; That is, animal welfare will be a fundamental axis in public policies.”
In that sense, Neyda Pat Dzul maintained that to achieve this objective, it is necessary to eradicate, even gradually, any show that promotes violence and cruelty against animals.
She explained that it is a fact that, in this type of show, the presence of children is observed, so “it is necessary to make an appeal to the parents and the municipal authorities, which is undoubtedly not an easy job, since “It is an issue that has become cultural.”
“And the fact is that, although lasso tournaments are not part of our ancestral cultures, it is something that has been appropriated, so to speak, in several municipalities, but it is not part of the Mayan culture,” she said.
She added that rather than taking prohibitive actions, we must begin to raise awareness within families and schools, but it is also necessary to make it clear that there are customs that can no longer be allowed such as violence towards women and in this initiative, it seeks to eradicate any type of violence towards animals.
