Definitive closure of the “Pig Beach” in Progreso, the piglets now live in Timucuy

The Progreso City Council announced this Monday, December 30, that the piglets of the “Pig Beach” are now in a better place where they will have the care and attention for their development.

As will be remembered, due to the threat of the impact of Hurricane Milton, the animals were removed from what was their home until then, a space on Progreso Beach called “Pig Beach.”

After the weather phenomenon passed, the place was left in poor condition and the piglets did not return to their home although the location where they were was not reported, they were in a shelter.

This day, the Progreso council reported that the piglets were transferred to the Management Unit for the Conservation of Wildlife, which is located in the municipality of Timucuy.

The authorities reported that in that place they have a larger space and areas that will allow them to live more comfortably. The person in charge of the place, Dr. Teresa Jaramillo, indicated that the treatment they will receive in this space in terms of handling and feeding will be ideal for them.

He pointed out that they will live in a 50 by 50 meter enclosure and they are already adapting to the new place in which they will live. He stressed that their diet is special for them, in addition to the fact that they will be provided with seasonal fruit, such as papaya, and pumpkin, among other foods.

He stated that being surrounded by tourists, they ran the risk of being fed things that are not suitable for them, since it is common for tourists to share their food with animals, such as “tortillas” and other foods that could affect their digestion and cause some metabolic disorders.

“People sometimes don’t understand that animals require a certain type of food and it is not possible for us to feed them that way. We cannot be giving them our snacks and other things we eat,” she indicated.

She assured that, in the case of piglets, their function is merely ornamental, since they are animals only for the company. She called for awareness before adopting this type of animal, since, although at first, they are small, later they reach a certain size that complicates their ownership. As for the beach called “Pig Beach”, which Mayor Erik Rihani had previously reported does not have the appropriate permits to operate as such; However, without going into details, it was reported that there will soon be new news regarding that space.
