High Specialty Hospital in Merida Doctors resign due to shortages and poor working conditions

The irregularities that have plagued the Regional Hospital of High Specialty of the Yucatan Peninsula (Hraepy) put it on the verge of closing its doors, and have forced dozens of doctors to leave the hospital because they lack basic supplies for care and there are no guarantees for them to carry out their work.

In addition, the deterioration of the infrastructure and equipment prevents them from carrying out their work to fulfill the oath of saving lives and, paradoxically, patients are increasingly alone and at high risk of dying, due to the indifference of the current director, Franz Suárez, and his “second on board”, the hospital administrator, Rossana Fuentes Suárez.

One of the most serious problems is the lack of maintenance of the hospital’s electric power plant, which has not received attention for more than a year. This has caused blackouts even during surgical procedures.

Irregularities reported at the High Specialty Hospital in Mérida; there is an increase in mortality and a shortage of 14 million pesos.

The air conditioning system has not been working for more than six months, which worsens the situation of elderly patients, children, and those with heart or thyroid problems, who are more susceptible to extreme heat. Doctors report that the mortality rate has even increased compared to previous years, due to the high temperatures inside the building.

Relatives of patients have had to bring fans, but this increases the risk of spreading infections by viruses and fungi in the air in the environment.

The abandonment of the hospital has increased mortality up to 66 percent, mainly due to the cancellation of the public tender for integrated medical services, a year ago, for which the only “reason” was that they were “adjusting the budget parameters” for the following year.

Recently, the few medical personnel who remain at the hospital informed Alejandro Svarch, director of IMSS Bienestar, of the problems that plague the hospital and the workers, even though Franz Suárez tried in a thousand ways to stop the complaints.

The staff denounced that the administration has not shown any willingness to solve the problems, despite the fact that there are resources available to do so. Images posted on social networks by citizens show leaky ceilings, humidity, and generally visible deterioration all over the place.

The lack of an effective solution to this problem reflects a worrying negligence on the part of the hospital administration.

The hospital staff denounced that the administration has not shown any willingness to solve the problems, although there are resources available to do so.

Thus, the lack of adequate administrative planning and the constant violation of the labor rights of medical personnel have added to the factors that aggravate the crisis at the hospital, and the doctors who previously provided their services have decided to retire, given the lack of guarantees to be able to carry out their work safely and effectively.

The situation at Hraepy demands prompt intervention by the health authorities to prevent more lives from being lost due to the lack of care and the deterioration of its facilities.

The complainants of the serious situation and the patients and relatives who have risked making the situation public expect immediate responses and solutions to the crisis affecting one of the most important health centers in Yucatan.
