The tranquility of Ixil, Yucatan, has been disturbed in recent days by the alarming killing of domestic animals, mainly dogs and cats, which have been found dead in various areas of the community. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has opened an investigation file and assured that the investigations are progressing to find the person responsible.
So far, 15 dead animals have been reported in circumstances that point to poisoning. Initially, authorities and citizens discovered the lifeless bodies of five dogs and a cat in homes located in different parts of Ixil. All the animals showed signs of intoxication and food remains with a suspicious substance were found in the surroundings, which suggested intentional poisoning.
The situation worsened with the discovery of 10 more animals, mostly dogs of different breeds such as beagles and labradors, lying in the streets and yards of homes in the downtown area The animals had foam in their snouts, a characteristic sign of poisoning.
The owners of the affected animals have expressed their outrage and are asking the municipal and state authorities to take action on the matter.
“We want municipal president Vicente Cobá, to respond and act,” said one of the residents who have filed complaints with the Attorney General’s Office to thoroughly investigate the case.
However, so far, the municipal authorities have not issued any official statement on the matter. On repeated occasions, attempts were made by media outlets to obtain a response from the mayor of Ixil, but he did not respond to calls.
The Forensic Veterinary Service went to the scene of the events to collect the corpses and perform laboratory tests to determine exactly the type of poison used and the cause of death of the animals.
The official silence has given rise to various speculations among the inhabitants of Ixil. While some say that it could be a person with mental health problems who is committing these atrocious acts, others suggest witchcraft.
Although these rumors have spread quickly, the authorities have not yet provided clarity or confirmed any line of investigation that would allow the person responsible to be identified.
The poisoning of pets in Ixil has not only generated concern among pet owners but has also raised alerts about possible risks to public health. Some neighbors fear that this poison could spread into the environment or indirectly affect other wild animals, birds, or even children who play in the same spaces where remains of poisoned food have been found.
The FGE indicated that the experts are working to gather all the necessary information to identify those responsible. However, progress in the investigation is limited, and no statements have been issued indicating any significant progress. Those affected and the rest of the community hope that the authorities’ follow-up will help clarify the case and apply the appropriate justice.
