Eight heads of state who have confirmed their presence at the G20 meetings have requested a bilateral meeting with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente reported on Friday, Nov. 8.
These are Canada, China, Korea, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, and the United Kingdom, so the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) is analyzing which of the requests to respond to so that the president can talk with her peers within the framework of the activities of this group, which will take place on November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
When asked in the morning about whether there will be a bilateral meeting with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, the foreign minister clarified that so far the American president has not confirmed his presence at the summit.
“The United States has not yet confirmed (the presence) of President Biden, it is anticipated that he will go,” said De la Fuente. Spain is invited to the summit, but they have not expressed any intention to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum.
In addition to this, the official stressed that Mexico joined the proposal that the host country, Brazil, presented to create a global alliance to combat poverty worldwide.
The foreign minister indicated that the head of the Mexican Executive will only attend the work of the first day, and will participate in two plenary sessions: the opening one in the morning, where hunger and poverty on a global scale and the fight against these problems will be discussed; and the second one in the afternoon, in which the necessary reforms for global governance institutions will be discussed.
Sheinbaum Pardo will return to Mexico on November 19, to lead the activities to commemorate the beginning of the Revolution on the 20th of this month.
De la Fuente detailed that work continues on the declaration of the G20. “I bring the latest version still in brackets, we are trying to ensure that the points that interest Mexico the most are represented and that there are no elements that could affect Mexico’s interests. It is a very careful negotiation work, which takes time. It is important because they are positions,” he said.
He pointed out that the heads of state who will participate in the G20 will debate the international political and economic situation and social inclusion. “This year there will be a lot of emphasis on the fight against hunger and poverty, the energy transition, the reforms required by global governance institutions, and there are always more sensitive points.”
The Indian foreign minister said that the issues that interest Mexico are that aspects of gender equality, sustainable development, and some elements of culture are touched upon and that the digital agenda is promoted, in the area of artificial intelligence.
