Yucatan government announces the modernization of the Mérida Airport

The governor of Yucatán, Joaquín Díaz Mena, announced the project to modernize and expand the Mérida “Manuel Crescencio Rejón” international airport.

At a press conference at the Yucatán representation in Mexico City, where the Yucatán Xmatkuil 2024 International Fair was presented, the improvements to the Mérida air terminal were announced. Governor Díaz Mena reported that the works will be done with Grupo Asur.

This project will require an investment of 2,150 million pesos to improve the state’s connectivity and attract more national and international tourism.

This is to ” convert the air terminal into a point of attraction for American tourists and allow many Yucatecans to travel directly to various entities in the United States.”

He highlighted that his government is working on four important projects, such as the modernization of the Progreso high port, with 80 hectares of platform and new terminals; expanding the Tren Maya from Umán to Progreso for the transportation of cargo and passengers; making well-being poles with natural gas and the Metropolitan Ring of Mérida.

Díaz Mena explained that these works will make Yucatán a logistics platform that serves international companies for relocation and taking advantage of nearshoring. Since the state is located near the east coast of the United States and, from Progreso, products can be brought to that market.

He said they also seek to connect the Maya Train with Progreso and the Transisthmian Train and offer an exit from Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, to the Asian continent.

“This way, Yucatán would be properly integrated into the industrial corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to offer an investment option in the state, with natural gas and all the other clean energy services that will be promoted in the coming years”, Joaquin Diaz Mena concluded.
