UNAM wins Google award to improve urban mobility in Mérida

The Google Academic Research Award 2024 was awarded to Jesús Siqueiros and Carlos Hernández, researchers at Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (IIMAS-UNAM), for their project aimed at transforming urban mobility in Mérida.

This recognition highlights the potential of its proposal to improve the public transportation system through artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on citizen participation and sustainability.

The project was presented in the category “Artificial Intelligence focused on society.” This approach aligns with Google’s vision of developing inclusive technologies that address social challenges.

“What our project does is seek to integrate citizen participation, artificial intelligence and sustainability in an equitable manner,” said Jesús Siqueiros.

Currently, the project is in the initial stage. However, its impact could open doors for other researchers looking for similar solutions in the field of public transport and sustainable mobility.

Siqueiros stressed the importance of designing routes that include shaded areas at bus stops to mitigate extreme heat.

This award reflects Google’s strategy to support projects that promote AI for the direct benefit of society. Siqueiros and Hernández’s proposal embodies this approach, prioritizing the needs of the communities and seeking a fair implementation of the technology.
