Day of the Dead festivities boost sales in small shops and anticipate a good end of the year

The celebration of the Day of the Dead is injecting a dose of joy to small merchants in our country and of course in the state. Trinidad Jiménez Guerrero, president of the National Chamber of Small Commerce (CANACOPE) in the state, reported that shop owners are experiencing an increase in their sales of up to 20%, driven mainly by the demand for traditional products such as sweets, candles, votive candles, and flowers.

This holiday, which combines ancestral traditions with religious elements, represents a unique opportunity for local businesses to boost their income. The custom of decorating altars, visiting cemeteries, and sharing food with loved ones has generated a significant increase in the purchase of these products.

For many small merchants, this upturn in sales comes at a crucial time. After facing the economic challenges derived from the pandemic, the Day of the Dead becomes a respite that allows them to strengthen their finances and prepare for the next high season: Christmas.

Jiménez Guerrero stressed the importance of supporting local businesses during these dates, since by purchasing products in the small shops, one contributes to the economy of the communities and preserves Mexican traditions.

“Although everything is more expensive since the price of candles, votive candles, sweets, and even everything necessary to make the pib has increased, Yucatecans have the custom of making the Pibes, food, setting up the altar in general, so the clientele does consume,” she said.

The leader of the small merchants in the state said that the merchants who benefit the most are those who also sell vegetables and seasonal fruits in their shops since they are fundamental elements that are consumed at this time of year.

Once the Day of the Dead comes to an end, merchants will already be focusing their efforts on preparing for the Christmas celebrations. It is expected that the demand for products such as decorations, lights, gifts, and typical foods of this time will increase considerably in the coming weeks.

“The stores are ready to serve their customers and offer them a wide variety of products so they can celebrate these special dates traditionally,” said the president of CANACOPE in the state.
