A rebound in hotel occupancy is expected in the coming months in Mérida. However, more tourism promotion is urgently needed, indicated Juan José Martín Pacheco, president of the Mexican Association of Hotels of Yucatán (AMHY).
Hanal Pixán represents a modest increase of 3% to 5% for the hotel sector since it is a local celebration, indicated Martín Pacheco.
He noted that this increase does not imply a drastic change in tourist flow. Still, it is a positive indicator in the regional context.
Although the long weekend corresponding to Hanal Pixán has a more cultural and regional character, it will not be neglected. He said the expectation is set on maximizing the potential of November 20 and Buen Fin (Mexican version of Black Friday), which attracts many buyers in the region.
“The private initiative, the Mérida City Council, and the State government must work together to ensure a successful closing of the year,” indicated the leader of the hoteliers.
Martín Pacheco emphasized the need for a more robust tourism promotion that covers not only Yucatán but also neighboring states such as Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Chiapas.
“We are working with Secretary Darío Flota to promote road tourism, filling all available seats to Yucatán,” he commented.
With several festive long weekends on the horizon, such as November 20, Buen Fin, and the Christmas festivities, an opportunity to attract visitors is looming.
“We must redouble our efforts in regional, national, and international promotions,” he noted. The lack of significant tourism events in recent months has led the sector to look for ways to compensate for lost time.
Martín Pacheco mentioned that they have also been working with the Mérida City Council to align efforts between the municipal and state governments, optimizing the available resources to attract more tourists. Next month, Yucatán will participate in the Montreal Fair, where a good flow of visitors is expected, especially older people who usually stay from three to fourteen days in Yucatán.
