In a spectacular accident, a tanker-type trailer overturned this morning at kilometer 224+200 of the Mérida-Cancún highway. The vehicle was carrying 33 thousand liters of jet fuel, which increased the risk of an explosion or spill.
The reports immediately reached the 911 emergency lines, around 9:30 a.m., which activated the Civil Protection teams of Benito Juárez and the Lázaro Cárdenas Fire Department. Both corporations quickly moved to the scene to control the situation and avoid a greater tragedy.
The area was immediately cordoned off, and strict safety protocols were implemented to prevent a disaster.
Emergency services asked drivers to avoid driving through the area, facilitating access to rescue units. Due to the severity of the incident, traffic on the highway was completely restricted. In addition, motorists were advised to use alternate routes while authorities worked to stabilize the overturned tanker.
So far, there has been no information on what caused the accident. Authorities continue to investigate the case while keeping the risk of jet fuel spillage under control. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported, but work to secure the area lasted for several hours.
